Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Flounder fishing was better this week when the wind wasn't blowing. Kingfish, spot, some blues, small croaker and a number of sharks were reported. Flounder were biting good at the wrecks. One of our customers caught a nice sized puppy drum from the bayside. Crabbing and clamming is still going on.
Oyster Bay is now open summertime hours 6 A.M. till 10 P.M. daily. Fenwick Tackle is open 7 A.M. till 10 P.M. Daily. E-mail Sue Foster at: Oyster Bay Tackle. online mall is open. We sell MD licenses and 2013 boat stickers at our Oyster Bay and Fenwick Tackle locations. De Licenses are sold at our DEL location. IF YOU WANT A BOAT FISHING LICENSE PLEASE TELL US THAT WHEN YOU GET TO THE COUNTER. Voids are no joy! For DEL boat fishing licenses you MUST bring in a current boat registration and a driver's license. (For MD boat stickers, all you need is a driver's license.)
MD fishing licenses are really quick and easy once you're in the system. If you have last year's MD license, bring it in with you, and all we have to do is punch in the DNR ID number. Otherwise, bring in your Driver's License.
(BTW, There's a mistake in the MD Fishing Guide about clamming. If you are out of state it IS legal for you to catch clams in Worcester Co. The state fixed the mistake online, but of course, thousands of Guides were already printed! I have had several e-mails about this.)
The Bulkhead at 2nd thru 4th Street is a free fishing zone. You can fish here without a MD license but you still need to obtain a free registry. We can do that for you at Oyster Bay Tackle or call 1-855-855-3906. Keeper flounder can be caught there if you are patient and fish the slacking tides. When the tide is moving hard, fish straight down. It's plenty deep! If you cast out during a hard running tide, you will constantly get hung up! Anglers can also catch little sea bass, spot, croaker, bluefish, tautog, puppy drum and trigger fish. Dave Beach caught a nice keeper flounder here this week!
The Ocean Pier is another place you can fish without a MD License. You can catch kingfish, croaker, spot, trout, puppy drum, snapper blues, flounder, sharks and rays. You can catch anything on the pier that you can catch from the surf.
2013 Tide Charts are now available in our stores and online. Go to our website and click on More Fishing Info.
Flounder season is now open in MD- Minimum Size - 16" Creel - 4 fish open all year.

Anglers are still catching panfish in the surf. Kingfish, spot, small croaker, sea trout, and more snapper blues are in the surf. For kingfish and spot use a kingfish rig (small hooks) with a combination bait of bloodworm or Fishbite bloodworm with a little strip of squid or any kind of cut bait. Bluefish take mullet, cut bunker, or cut spot. A lot of sharks was reported this week. One customer showed me several pictures he had on his cell phone. Looked liked dusky sharks... One was 30 some inches and the other was 40 some inches. All safely released.
"Poppy" posted on Stripers Online on the 14th: "Finally some action w/ nice size toothy critters...at night and what I think were Spinners...in the 5' foot range...great sport IMO...a lot of power and speed!"
Someone also posted a picture of a 46-inch red drum that was caught and released from the Assateague surf. Another angler posted a picture of a big shark swimming in the surf, either a dusky or a sand bar shark.
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on Stripers Online. Check it out: Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching fish in the surf, you need to study this!
Our online mall is now open and we have: Trailhead Tire Deflators! We also carry the Oasis Trailhead brand.
Surf Packages, complete with sinkers. (Also flounder, Aqua-Clear, Swim Shad, and Got-cha Plug Packages.)
Oyster Bay Tackle and Fenwick Tackle saw some fish this week!
Dan Mattio, Bob Weaver and Curtis Day landed five nice flatties on the outgoing tide in the west channel. They varied in size from 23" to 17". The bait used was mullet and mud minnows. "We found we must be patient and wait for the bite!"
Dave Beach Jr. e-mailed in: "My dad and I caught two keeper flounder today at the bulkhead. His was 16 1/4 inch on a quarter ounce gotcha jig head tipped with 4 inch swimming Pear White Gulp Mullet while casting in the channel. Mine was 17 inches on a regular flounder rig with minnows."
Larry Wayne caught a 22" flounder in east channel on the O.C.Joy!
Jordan Loundas (15 years old) and Matt Starkey (14 years old) of Forrest Hill and Phonix, MD with a 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 pound flounder, 16 1/2 and 20 inches, caught on Gulp in the East Channel near the Rt. 50 Bridge.

These pictures are in our Inshore Photo Gallery.
Tony Freiji sent in his picture and report from offshore: "We caught this 60 lb. yellowfin and two Mahis while trolling ballyhoo and spreaders at the Hot Dog. The boat is called the "My Special D" with Captain Khalil Freiji, Anglers Tony Freiji, and Dave Hynes.
The Angler Party boat sent in some nice pics of catches this week. Sea Bass, flounder, and dolphin...
Their pictures are in our Offshore Photo Gallery.
J.J. from the Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) reported big flounder, some croaker, trout, blues and little sea bass for the kids to catch. (You do not need a fishing license to fish the Oceanic Pier.)
Route 50 Bridge has seen flounder and blues by day. Some tautog are being caught near the pilings close to the draw. A few black drum here and there as well. At night the fare is bluefish, trout, and stripers. Usually blues come around on an East Wind. Striper fishing has been up and down. More down than up! Hopefully this cooler weather will get them moving!
Larry Jock of the Coastal Fisherman reports on Friday: "The head boat, "Happy Hooker" had a group from the CD Outdoors Fishing Camp on board and they had 4 keeper flounder near Buoy #5. All on squid and shiners."Moppet" went out to the Old Grounds and had 7 flounder up to 23-inches and a sea bass. All caught on spot."Jezebel" had 15 flounder and 14 triggerfish at Fenwick Shoal. Party boat, "Morning Star" went to the Old Grounds and returned with some flounder, the largest measured 25.5-inches."
On Thursday Larry reports: "John Hoffman called in to report that his group caught 4 flounder around the South Jetty and 3 around the North Jetty. Charter boat, "Get Sum" had 3 keeper flounder during their afternoon trip.Charter boat, "Get Sum had 4 keeper flounder during their evening trip."
Capt Jeff from Hellbent Charters e-mailed in his report this week: "We finally had a brake from the South winds fo the first time in a long time. Because of the East winds the last few days we finally have clean water! The East wind did make it hard to fish certain areas during certain tides but we were able to catch some Flounder. I meet a youg man this past April who was on recovering from a bone marrow transplant and was still fighting to beat cancer. I promised to take him and his family fishing if he was well enough to do so this summer. Well I got to keep that promise yesterday got to take him and his family fishing. I am very happy to see him doing great and is looking forward to getting on with the rest of his long life ahead of him stating with getting back to school next week. It was a great pleasure to see everyone catch at least one fish including Mom who caught the biggest and most fish. We found a few fish behind Harbor Island and in the commercial harbor. The east wind made it tough going at times but we were able to catch some fish. White Gulp continued to be the bait of choice but live minnows were a close second. With clean water and warmer weather on the way there is still time to book a trip. Call me at 717 574 4010 or email me at helbentcharters@hotmail.com.Check my website at helbentcharters.com. See you on the water."
Capt Jeff is one of the few charters going out of North Ocean City.
Dave Beall of Dave's Delmarva First Mate Service reported this week: "There seem to be more Trout lately although they are on the small side; there are some keepers though. The Flounder have been really nice and fat. They really bulk up this time of the year. I have had several Flounder over 20" this past week. They are hitting 3" Tsunami Paddletails, 4" splittail white soft plastics and Curl tail 4" soft plastics in opening night color. I have done best on the early outgoing water. Mullet are starting to show up in numbers now so there will be more Stripers as well. This Fall should be great fishing. Have a GREAT WEEK, Dave" Check out his new web site.
Flounder and Surf, Rig and Lure Packages, Selection of Swimming Shads or Gotcha Plugs!
Crabbing was only fair this week. Coming up on a full moon... Northside Park at 125th Street is a good place to crab. There's plenty spot fish to catch there too. You can also crab from the Isle of Wight at 62nd Street, Convention Hall at 41st Street, Jamestown Road (the whole city park side of the lagoon), 9th Street Pier, or Assateague State Park.
If you want to go clamming from the shore in Ocean City you can clam behind the Convention Center at 41st Street or go to Assateague. No license required for crabbing or clamming in MD Coastal Bays. We have been renting and selling rakes and vacationers are catching clams!
Capt. Monty on the " Morning Star reports on Aug 11th:
"Greetings All, Typical for late summer; fishing's not always easy. We're sending almost everyone home with a good fish fry, some days much better. The mix of flounder/cbass has been more even – occasionally catching flounder on clam and sea bass on strip baits.. There are days, however, when one species dominates. This Saturday was all flounder. Last Saturday was all sea bass.. If you really have your heart set on one species and not the other — stay away. We will fish for what's biting – not what you were hoping for..
Backward. Sea bass seemed like the thing Friday so I got on the PA system & advised everyone to stay with cbass baits. Next drop we had 4 keeper flounder, some on clam. Mr. Charles was high-hook on flatties & took everyone's money. Tuesday we had a nice shot of fluke – several fellows limited-out – but precious few cbass. I should mention VW Bob would have won the pool if we'd had one on our reef building trip last Sunday. He did limit & win the pool on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with flounder. Thursday a sea bass finally beat him.. He fishes an enormous bucktail with a smaller one tied above; a rig I can never get to work!
Good days & clunkers; We really have to work for a catch. Clients have to work at it too. You will need a fish cooler, just not a large one. "

Capt Chris Mizurak of the Angler (410-289-7424) e-mailed in on Aug 19th: "We had some very good fishing this past week, and also some pretty slow fishing. Tuesday we saw some of the best fishing of the season. A few customers had limits of flounder up to 5lbs, and one person was very close to a limit of seabass. Wednesday was one of our slowest days of the year. We should continue to see a mix of seabass and flounder in the coming weeks. We are sailing daily from 730am-2pm. Please call 410-289-7424 for more information and reservations. Thanks and hope to see you soon!"
Capt Victor of the Ocean Princess e-mailed in on July 2nd:
"The Ocean Princess is sailing two trips daily 8am to 12 noon and 1pm to 5pm. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays the Ocean Princess also takes a night trip from 6pm to 10pm. For reservations or additional information call 410-289-6226."
Joe at Lewes Harbour Marina (302-645-6227) reports on Aug 15th: "...Flounder fishermen have had fair catches in both the Ocean and Delaware Bay, but they've had to work them. The best concentrations of flatties continue to be found around heavy cover, such as the artificial reefs and wrecks. Go prepared to lose tackle when you work these areas because the fish are right among the rubble. Bucktail jigs with a teaser or short leadered bottom rigs are effective, and a little less likely to get snagged. Adding a Gulp! Swimming Mullet, Jerk Shad or Belly Strip to jigs enhances their effectiveness. Strips of fresh cut bait such as bluefish or sea robin, and squid, smelts and silversides are favorites of flatfish too. In the Bay, sites 6 and 7 at Brown Shoal yielded some fluke at the beginning and end of the tide. Brian Logue bucktailed a 6.57 pounder from Site 7 on Sunday. Nate Evans nailed a 6.54 pound fluke Sunday. Katie Malin captured two quality keepers at Site 8 aboard Quintessa Monday. Joe Walker and friends had 9 keepers at the Starsite Tuesday. Ocean reef structure at Sites 9, 10 and 11 held flounder, and rough, live bottom of the Old Grounds between DB and DA Buoys was productive too. Captain Brent's flukers aboard Katydid on Sunday scored 18 beautiful keepers, including specimens of 6.1 and 6.9 pounds. The largest of the trip was a 27 1/2 inch 8.4 pound doormat landed by Jason Lhamon. Wayne Demarco and Joe and Paul Pergeorelis drifted near Site 11 Sunday for their limit of a dozen flatties, including Paul's 5.31 pounder. Scott Ayars checked in yesterday with 3 keepers to 3.61 pounds he caught at the Old Grounds aboard Thelma Dale IV, despite blustery winds.
Bottom bouncers in the Bay are still finding croakers just about everywhere. Better sized ones hung out near the Ferry Jetty and right in the heaviest reef cover. Hardheads up to 2 pounds were found near the Gypsum Prince wreck off Cape Henlopen. Plenty of spot, kingfish, blowfish and spike trout rounded out the mix available to anglers. Triggerfish were taken along the Outer Wall and Ice Breakers. Alex Joseph was surprised when a 67.2 pound black drum grabbed the strip of squid he was drifting past the Haystacks for flounder. Evan Falgowski got a 6.4 pound sheepshead from the rocks. The offshore bottomfishing remains good for those venturing to the canyons. A group of deep droppers aboard Katydid returned from the Wilmington Tuesday with an impressive haul of 200 blueline and golden tilefish. A few yellowfins and wahoo were reported by trollers in 30 fathoms between the Elephant Trunk and Hot Dog Notch. Nighttime chunkers in the Washington got into good number of yellowfins. Pete Mohacey battled and released a 98 inch blue marlin in 70 fathoms of Poor Man's Sunday aboard Tranquila."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" fishes out of Fisherman's Wharf. Here's his report from Aug 8th:
It's been another decent week of fishing here at Fisherman's Wharf. Capt. H.D. actually loaded up and came home a little early from his Long-Range Tile fishing trip this past weekend, The Croakers have been plentiful on the inshore charters and the Half-Day trips, and the Flounder continue to both please and frustrate anglers on a daily basis.
Our Summer schedule continues at the Wharf with both Full and Half Day trips sailing seven days a week. I will be running the Full-Day trips departing at 7:00 a.m. and Flounder will continue to be our primary target along with Sea Bass or whatever else is willing to bite our hooks. Flounder fishing should be good for several more weeks and I also anticipate more and more of a variety in the catch as we progress. Half-Day trips sail at 8:00 a.m. and then again at 1:00 p.m. with evening trips sailing on Friday and Saturday Nights at 6:00 p.m. Half-Day trips will be targeting primarily Croakers. Capt. H will be running a 12-Hour trip for Sea Bass and Ling this Saturday and is also looking foreword to his next Deep Drop trip the following week. Reservations are required for the Long-Range trips but not for the Sea Bass trip this weekend as it is just an open boat.
If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special trip please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Old Inlet Bait and Tackle (302-227-7974) reports on the 14th: "Fishing is starting to improve after a couple of weeks of the summer doldrums.
Floating sand fleas has been very effective in the Inlet at night. Plenty of undersized stripers around with an increasing number of keepers in the mix. Eddie Heite had a 22' inch red drum and a 32" striped bass on fleas Monday night. Dave Tolbert had a keeper red drum as well. Bluefish are starting to come in the Inlet with a little more regularity too on the day time incoming tide. Interestingly, they have been running deep and not on the surface.Tautog, black drum and sheepshead have been pretty good along the railing and the rockpile.Red drum and croakers reported in the bays. The best flounder bite is out on the Old Grounds southeast of B Buoy. Still a few lingering flounder in the Inland bays. Kingfish, spot and croakers on the beach. The spot are getting to be very good eating size. 8 inches plus in some cases.Pompano and red drum should be on the beaches soon! Very good tuna and billfish bite in the Washington canyon. Mahi and wahoo reported on the 20 and 30 fathom lines."
Bill's Sport Shop (302-645-7654) in Lewes, DE reports on the 16th:"More black drum on bloodworms and shrimp at Massey's Landing! Lot of croaker at Massey's Landing too on bloodworm. Flounder in the bays and ocean and on the Cape Henelopen Pier. Croaker everywhere!".

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck, inlet and trolling trips. Here's a couple of his reports from this week:
"08/16/13 Today found me searching the boat for Bill Murray since it seemed Fin Chaser was staring in a remake of the movie Groundhog Day. The day started exactly as yesterday. One mahi goes in the box, then a white marlin decides to tease us for a while. We troll through a sixty minute dry spell and then several white marlin figure it’s time to prove that our southern style tuna hooks aren’t the hot ticket for marlin. Mixed in white these whites were a couple nice gaffer mahi which our hooks had no problems grabbing. By the days end we were 0 for 5 on whites and 4 for 4 on mahi.
08/15/13 Out with Emmy the marlin slayer and her dad. Ten minutes after setting the spread we have a mahi in the box. Our next bite comes about twenty minutes later when a white marlin decides he wants to play with our long bait. Worked that area for another 45 minutes without a pull so we picked up and ran another 10 miles east. Fifteen minutes after resetting the spread we have two more mahi in the box. Swung around for another pass but before any mahi could pile on a 200 lb. blue marlin crushes our mid-rigger. This fish puts on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, literally doing a 360 around the boat with jumps before deciding to run anyway at 100 mph. The fight lasted 20 minutes and Emmy did great but with a sneaky move that I just wasn’t able to keep up with he breaks the line against the forward hull. The next couple hours see’s a couple more mahi and a white marlin that pulls drag for a couple seconds but doesn’t take the hook. Back in the slip with 8 mahi in the box and great memories of a beautiful blue marlin."
Larry Jock of the Coastal Fisherman reports from offshore on Saturday: "Not the prettiest day today. Seas are rough. The final day of the 2013 Poor Girls Open was held today at Bahia Marina. Here's what we saw: "Yellowfin" weighed a pair of dolphin (4.8 & 5.8 lbs.)"Foolish Pleasures" weighed 4 dolphin from the Norfolk (9.7, 10.8, 11.2 & 12.8 lbs.)"Knot Tellin'" jumped into 2nd place with 3 white marlin releases and a blue marlin release. All in the Washington Canyon."No Quarter" weighed a 68.1 lb. wahoo. Outside the tournament...Charter boat, "Thonda's Osprey" released a white marlin in the Poorman's Canyon. Charter boat, "Sushi" caught 7 yellowfins and a 220# bigeye in the Washington. "Marli" released 3 white marlin between the Norfolk & the Washington."

Dave Beall has retired from his "real job" and has set up a little local First Mate Service. I have a lot of anglers ask to pay someone to go out with them on their new boat and show them the waters and how to fish. I also have anglers that would like to pay someone to teach them how to fish off the beach. Check out his new web site.
(Just a note to say to my readers that many of my fishing reports are from other anglers and party boats that come over my e-mail. When I "copy/paste" their reports I try to leave them intact. It keeps the fishing reports lively and interesting. But any comments/politics within the quotes are their comments and views, and not necessarily mine.)

James A. Donofrio, executive director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance has been actively working on the fisheries crisis. The RFA believes the future of our fisheries is dependent on fixing the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act which has laid down strict time-frames that do not take into account livelihoods and that a fishery is rebounding steadily.

If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license, it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own individual states. (VA Free Registry)

Ocean City now has two free fishing zones. The bulkhead from 2nd to 4th Street (Chicago Ave.) and the Northside Park at 125th Street. You do not need a license in these two places but you do need a "free registry." Go here to register online. This is free and can also be done over the phone during daytime hours of 7-7 at 1-855-855-3906. We can also do your free registry at Oyster Bay Tackle.
