OC FLOUNDER FISHING

Sent into Maryland DNR on: July 31, 2013 by Ed Dorsch

OC FLOUNDER FISHING

Type: Coast

Region: Eastern

Location: Bays Behind OC and Assateague

Tags: Summer Flounder, Bluefish, Kingfish

Spent the week of July 20-27 in OC with 4 days of flounder fishing on board my new pontoon boat the “Net Flounders” (you’ll understand if you are a Simpsons fan).

All told we boated maybe 50 flounder, a single blue and several kingfish (long time since I caught any in the bays behind OC) but no sea bass or sea robins which I thought was odd.

Took at least 1 keeper every trip with a total of 6 on minnows…16, 16.5, 17, 17.5 18 and 20″. Most caught behind Assateague and a couple near the entrance to Harbour Island.

Water was VERY cold (61-64) and Thursday we had winds at 20-25mph…funny, but we took 30 fish and 3 keepers that day too.

Attached is a photo of my son Steve with the biggest (20″) of the week.

Keith Lockwood is taking a well-deserved break from DNR duties for a couple of weeks. Joe Evans is filling in his absence.

The great advantage we have in the DNR Fisheries community is that our biologists are all keen anglers. When they are not studying fish, they are most likely out fishing, which is very much the same thing.

DNR Fisheries Western Region biologist and trout authority Al Klotz offers these observations:

“This rainy summer has made for some good summer flows in Western Maryland trout streams. The insect hatches have trickled off, however. Still, the swimming mayfly Isonychia is emerging this time of year and can provide some good fly-fishing using both nymph and adult fly imitations. Grasshoppers and crickets are starting to appear along the streams, and these terrestrial patterns can also produce this time of the year. I fished the Youghiogheny River Catch and Return Trout Fishing Area one evening recently and tried my luck using both the Isonychia nymph patterns and grasshopper flies. I caught a couple of mid-sized Rainbow Trout on the nymphs, and then switched over to the grasshopper pattern once the sun was off the water. The trout hit the grasshopper pattern with an explosive strike fished in the faster deep runs.”

Western Maryland foam hopper fly.

DNR biologist and Smallmouth Bass expert John Mullican brings news of the 2013 Upper Potomac Smallmouth Bass survey and the action on the river:

“We have been evaluating the 2013 year-class of Smallmouth Bass in the Potomac and larger tributaries for a few weeks. This annual survey is conducted using a 30-foot seine at multiple sites throughout the upper Potomac from Cumberland to just downstream of Great Falls. We use the annual mean number of young smallmouth bass collected per seine haul as an index to estimate year-class strength. We also record the number of nongame and forage species. Stronger year-classes are generally produced during springs with stable, average flows; while springs with flooding and highly variable flows tend to result in weaker year-classes. Highly variable year-class strength is quite normal for river Smallmouth populations.

2013 has been a wet year, and the Potomac experienced a number of high flow events during the spring and a particularly ill-timed event that occurred in early May when the Smallmouth Bass were spawning. Although this year’s survey is still being conducted, and won’t be completed for several more weeks, preliminary results suggest that this year’s hatch of Smallmouth Bass will be below the long-term median value at most locations. We’ll post the results when we have completed the survey of all sites.

Meanwhile, the wet weather has continued into the summer months, and that has been good for fishing. River flows have been above normal, allowing easier navigation. The Smallmouth fishing has been very good. During the hot days of summer, the best action is typically during the early morning or late evening hours. Start off with topwater baits such as Tiny Torpedoes and buzz baits. Switch to tubes and stick worms rigged wacky or Texas style when the surface action slows. Fish the waters with current and fish holding cover such as water-willow beds, boulders, and rock ledges. That’ll work.”

DNR Upper Potomac bass survey

Upper Potomac River young-of-the-year Smallmouth Bass

DNR Inland Fisheries director Don Cosden echoes the good fishing report:

“We canoed and fished the Potomac River between Harpers Ferry and Brunswick on Sunday. Conditions were perfect for fishing mid-day at this time of year. The water was a little higher than normal and the slight bit of turbidity and cloudy conditions helped to cut the light penetration. Smallmouth and Redbreast Sunfish were active the entire day. My wife was getting them on small spinning lures. I experimented with the fly rod unsuccessfully at first but slowly caught up with Susie after switching to a wacky worm. Later in the day as the clouds thickened, I had success on a fly rod popper. In the end we each caught more than 50 bass. Many were 12 inches or larger, including several which exceeded 16 inches. After running the ledges at Knoxville we jumped out of the boats and floated in tubes and life vests just to cool off and relax. I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer day in Maryland.”

Legendary Bass Guide, Andy Andrzejewski, reports that the recent cool nights have dropped tidal Potomac River water temperatures into the low 80′s. The early morning top-water bite remains strong. Andy prefers poppers over grass frogs because the poppers simply catch more than the frogs. But, in the thick grass, frogs and rats work better.

The wacky-rigged stick worm is his next favorite bait, fished slowly along grass or pad edges and anywhere a marsh drains into the creeks. Boat docks and bridge pilings in less than nine feet of water provide consistent bites when fished with worms or jigs. The outgoing tide and the first two hours of the incoming tide seem to be the best times for catching.

DNR Fisheries Eastern Region biologist Brett Coakley confirms the reports of many other anglers who have found dependable Striped Bass action in the Maryland’s Middle Bay waters:

“Live-lining spot for stripers in the Poplar Island area remains steady. Fleets of up to 100 boats were there this weekend. Live-lining will become more difficult with reports of decent sized bluefish moving up from the south.

The break in the heat brought out some anglers onto Unicorn Lake. Most caught an abundance of bluegills and a few yellow perch, bass and pickerel. Normally, Unicorn is covered in algae, which makes the fishing tough. The summer rains have kept the algae at bay for the most part.

Crabbing on the Chester and other Upper Bay areas remains pretty spotty, although the crabs you get tend to be large and fat.”

Coakley’s Middle Bay rockfish report is corroborated by the fact that as of 12:00 p.m. 7/30/13, DNR Fisheries staff and the Natural Resource Police are in the process of certifying twenty-two 2013 Diamond Jim recapture tags.

That’s right; 22.

By comparison, the 2012 Maryland Fishing Challenge produced nine Diamond Jim recaptures over the summer. The anglers who caught those tagged fish took home $2,778 checks for their efforts at the Maryland Fishing Challenge finale held in conjunction with the Maryland Seafood Festival last September.

11-year-old Nathan Smith and his 2013 tagged Diamond Jim rockfish.

As of July 26, DNR Fisheries biologists and volunteer youth anglers had caught, tagged and released about 600 Diamond Jim rockfish. Each fish is worth at least $500 to the lucky recreational fisherperson who catches it. One of these fish could be worth as much as $25,000 and a set of diamond studs. Learn more at the Maryland Fishing Challenge web page.

Further proof of excellent fishing came aboard my skiff this week with a visit from renowned ex-charter captain turned musical impresario Chuck Fisher, who came out to tune me up on his signature live-lining method. We left Annapolis at sunrise to catch the bait and beat the heat. No more than 500 yards from the dock, we found pan-worthy white perch on every throw using blood worms on double dropper rigs cast in toward some rip-rap. That was enough to placate the folks at home who would forgive a day of hooky in exchange for delicious filets. We moved out to the tip of the Tolly Point bar in search of Norfolk Spot for bait ( Here in Maryland, we prefer calling them simply “spot,” apparently not willing to offer Virginia any consideration on this.) We caught just about everything but spot, including big grumpy Croakers, plump White Perch, and several small stripers—one after the other. Inshore at the Bay Ridge rocks in less than two feet of water, we caught and released a dozen huge spot, and we kept one dainty bait-sized example for the live well. We rigged that lone victim up on Captain Fisher’s excellent live-line float rig and pretty much immediately caught a 26-inch striper near the Hacketts buoy under a half-acre of rippling Menhaden. With just one keeper rockfish, we could still come home knowing that everywhere we fished and nearly every time we cast, we caught something sweet.

DNR Coastal Fisheries biologist Steve Doctor offers a brief rundown of the Atlantic coast action:

“The Summer Flounder pattern continues with good fishing at the reefs. The flounder fishing in the coastal bays has been a little slow due to turbid water. Surf anglers are racking up kingfish, croakers, spot and big rays. Crabbing remains sketchy, but the clamming is good.

Offshore at the Washington Canyon, yellowfin tuna and wahoo occasionally join the party. Bluefin tuna have been dependable over the Hot Dog lump.

“Sleeping, we image what awake we wish; Dogs dream of bones, and fishermen of fish.” - Theocrites

We are having some difficulties with the website fishing report posts! Those will be back up and running soon! Today a day filled with tuna and dolphin when our fleet began to arrive back at the docks. An impressive 28 pound dolphin was landed aboard the "Foolish Pleasures" with Captain Dale Lisi along with 24 other nice sized dolphin and a report of a white marlin release! (photo)Captain Jeremy Shandrowski on the "Playmate" returned with 3 yellowfin. A total of 7 yellowfin were in the box for the crew aboard the "Moore Bills" with Captain Rob Skillman at the helm. On a 1/2 day inshore Captain Jeremy Blunt on the "Blood, Sweat & Tears" filled the box with bluefish and ran into some sharks releasing 4 spinner and a n Atlantic sharpnose. Captain Mark Sampson on the "Fish Finder" had a successful day of sharking returning with a total of 7 Atlantic Sharpnose between his two trips and reports of releasing other species of shark such as Blacktip and Spinner. The "Bay Bee" had a day full of throwbacks and 2 keepers in the afternoon trip. Captain Nick Clemente on the "Get Sum" lead his crew to 5 keepers among plenty of throwbacks today. Overall the fishing is great right now don't miss your opportunity to fish with Ocean City's Premier Charter Fleet!

07/29/13 Out with a couple from MD for a day of offshore action. After spending about an hour working the big hill for bluefin, I decide to work back inshore a couple miles and look at another smaller hill these fish will hide on. Just before we go up the hill our short rigger get nailed, a couple minutes later we put a 20 lb. yellowfin in the box. A couple passes over the hill and we have a 65 lb. bluefin in the box too. Looking for something our lady angler can crank on we troll south looking for a mahi or two. Spent the last couple hours working a small area on the 30 fathom line and going 1 of 2 on mahi as well as adding two more small yellowfin to the box.

07/28/13 Looking for fish with a crew who did not want to chunk for bluefin. After trying to get a bite among the chunking fleet without any success we run east looking for some gear that was present the last two years. The bottom gear is gone but I spot a long line set and work those balls which yields a couple bites and a few mahi in the box. Troll back inside to a few hills just south of the bluefin hole and manage to capture one more mahi and a small yellowfin.

07/27/13 Cancelled due to a broken throttle cable.

07/26/13 Today began at 2:30 am standing at the inlet calling the guys and telling them the wind has layed-out but the ocean’s still angry so I think we should wait a while before heading out. At 7 am we head out with bait on board for flounder fishing as well as tuna bait if we decide to keep rolling east. After 16 miles I as the guy what they’d like to do, flounder is the call. Spent a few hours drifting for those tasty flatties but dirty water and cold temps really put a damper on the bite. After 4 hours we had 7 fish in the box as well as releasing some that were just under the limit.

Monday July 29:

Another steller day on the Moore Bills. Traveled around some epic lightning storms early morning to land in the Washington Canyon for the early bite with lone spreader bar and big boy green stick in action. Landed a healthy white marlin within the first 10 minuets of trolling, almost to to excite the young crew nursing last nights misadventures on land. The day continued with non stop action! Estimated over 60 Yellowfin with a couple skippies in the mix. The crew was in constant motion all day. Anglers were in full participation with direction from Captain Rob and 1st mate Steve. First time gaffers and first time offshore ladies played part in an exciting day laying tracks throughout the canyon many miles from the land of funnel cake and parking meters. Once outside ( About 60 Miles), life was abundant, pilot wales were feeding and swimming around the boat every second of the day (no exaggeration !!!) . For the first timers and the experienced anglers it was a show not to be matched by any documentary! The green stick provided a days worth of entertainment and worked the overworked throughout the day. Resetting lines and drilling in on the fish, Captain Rob and Steve proved there weight in fish and experience. Anglers watched the action as tuna boiled and hit the rigs over and over. Lines peeled off, anglers danced a clumbsy waltz ducking and switching places like a game of leap frog. 1st mate Captain Steve was the ref and worked the crew like a well oiled machine as head honcho Captain Rob rolled forward with a mission. Anglers rotated through each cover up and chilled in the AC when it was time to tag off . A highlight of the day provided an arial show and a mangled up unlucky yellowfin when an estimated 400 ld blue marlin charged the already hooked tuna and than took flight! All in all another high energy day on the Moore Bills. Visit moorebilles.com to see the full video, another day in the near future...

Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report

By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE

July 29th, 2013

Fishing Report by Sue Foster

Some good flounder fishing this week in Ocean City. We got the pictures

to prove it! Kingfish and spot in the surf, along with big rays and sand

sharks. Red Drum are still being caught up around the Fenwick Ditch

near the Bridge pilings along with some good sized croaker. Flounder

fishing is picking up offshore. Sea bass fishing is happening. Further

offshore we have tuna, wahoo, marlin, and dolphin. Crabbing and clamming

has been decent.

Oyster Bay is now open summertime hours 6 A.M. till 10 P.M. daily.

Fenwick Tackle is open 7 A.M. till 10 P.M. Daily. E-mail Sue Foster at:

mailto:sue@oysterbaytackle.com. online mall is open. We sell

MD licenses and 2013 boat stickers at our Oyster Bay and Fenwick Tackle

locations. De Licenses are sold at our DEL location. IF YOU WANT A

BOAT FISHING LICENSE PLEASE TELL US THAT WHEN YOU GET TO THE

COUNTER. Voids are no joy! For DEL boat fishing licenses you MUST

bring in a current boat registration and a driver's license. (For MD

boat stickers, all you need is a driver's license.)

MD fishing licenses are really quick and easy once you're in the system.

If you have last year's MD license, bring it in with you, and all we

have to do is punch in the DNR ID number. Otherwise, bring in your

Driver's License.

(BTW, There's a mistake in the MD Fishing Guide about clamming. If you

are out of state it IS legal for you to catch clams in Worcester Co. The

state fixed the mistake online, but of course, thousands of Guides were

already printed! I have had several e-mails about this.)

The Bulkhead at 2nd thru 4th Street is a free fishing zone. You can

fish here without a MD license but you still need to obtain a free

registry. We can do that for you at Oyster Bay Tackle or call

1-855-855-3906. Keeper flounder can be caught there if you are patient

and fish the slacking tides. When the tide is moving hard, fish

straight down. It's plenty deep! If you cast out during a hard running

tide, you will constantly get hung up! Anglers can also catch little

sea bass, spot, croaker, bluefish, tautog, puppy drum and trigger fish.

The Ocean Pier is another place you can fish without a MD License. This

week the pier continued to have good catches of kingfish along with

croaker, spot, trout, puppy drum, snapper blues, flounder, sharks and

rays. You can catch anything on the pier that you can catch from the

surf. There were definitely lots of rays and sharks this week!

Flounder season is now open in MD- Minimum Size - 16" Creel - 4 fish

open all year.

It's been a great year in the surf for kingfish(whiting) and spot." A

kingfish rig (small hooks) with a combination bait of bloodworm or

Fishbite bloodworm with a little strip of squid or any kind of cut bait

will catch you kingfish, spot, and small trout. Not much large stuff to

catch unless you want sharks and big rays. They are there!

Hammy posted on Stripers Online about Sunday: "Another beautiful day at

AI! And no bugs for the second straight day! Again, we caught about 20

fish in all in 4 hours including 6 kingfish for dinner, some spot, a

blowfish, a bluefish, and 4 dogfish sharks!"

Spanky posted on Stripers Online about Saturday: "Assateague Island

Saturday, lots of spot, 1 small flounder, some kings and one giant ray

that almost took my Ballistic/Stella setup into the ocean had my wife

not of said something. Put up a good 10 minute fight. Awesome watching

my 7 year old daughter reeling in 2 spot at a time!"

"Hammy" posted on Stripers Online on Friday: "We had a great day on the

beach at AI yesterday, catching about 20 fish in 2.5 hours. We got a

bite nearly every cast, catching a mix of dogfish, kingfish, spot,

blowfish, and even a striper at about 20 inches.

All of the dogfish were between 8-12 inches, and looked as if they were

just born. Anyone know when they give birth? We caught 11 total sharks

in all."

"Yianni" of Oyster Bay Tackle has been surf fishing most mornings in

North Ocean City. He's been catching spot on bloodworms or Fishbite

Bloodworms, then cutting them up and catching some nice sized kingfish!"

I like to use a piece of bloodworm or Fishbites and add a small strip of

cut bait such as that fresh caught spot when I fish for kings!

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a

very good angler has posted another very good description with pictures

on Stripers Online. Check it out: http://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/showthread.php?t=537410&highlight=Reading+Water He draws it out

completely! If you're not catching fish in the surf, you need to study

Ed Dorshe e-mailed in his report: "Just back from our yearly flounder

fishing vacation in OC. We fished 4 days, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and

Thursday and managed to bring home 6 keepers from just over 16 to just

under 20 inches. All were caught on minnow and the best day we had was

Thursday despite the strong northerly winds. We managed 3 keepers (16.5,

17 and 18.5...photo attached of them in the live well) that day while

fishing behind Assateague Island...two near the commercial harbor and

the other near the duck blinds. While we caught plenty of throwbacks all

over from the duck blinds to the Thorofare, our best keeper success was

behind Assateague and near Harbour Island."

J.J. from the Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) reported an excellent week on

flounder and lots of small fish for the kids to catch. There were a

couple good runs of croaker, lots of spot, some blues and shad picked

up. At night the action has been really good on trout. Some nights they

catch over a hundred. Remember, you are only allowed to keep one!!!

Occasionally someone catches a red drum or a tautog. (You do not need a

fishing license to fish the Oceanic Pier.)

Route 50 Bridge has seen flounder by day along with some snapper blues

and a few trout. At night the fare is bluefish, trout, and some

stripers. Heard some big blues came around the bridge one day last week.

Usually blues come around on an East Wind.

Larry Jock of the http://coastalfisherman.net/ reports on Saturday: "1:20 PM - Jim Simon just stopped

by the office with 3 flounder caught off the North Jetty Wall with live

finger mullet. Fish measured 17", 19" and 20". 1:40 PM - Michele

Goodson from Grasonville, MD stopped by to have her picture taken with

the 23-inch, 4 lb. 14 oz. flounder she caught in the West Channel by

Hooper's Crab House

sorry folks trying to keep up with the fishing report has been tough. We have definitely seen an increase in the number of dolphin in the past week and the tuna fishing has been on fire all week with the exception of Saturday in which there were just to many boats. Double digit catches and bites were the norm including today. We would like to see a few more yellowfins but still hard to complain with the big bluefin tuna we have been seeing. Why watch wicked tuna on TV when you can be part of the action.

Capt. Todd and First mate Kevin headed to the Dog with the Joe Scallion angler party.
Lots of boats were there and it was a slow pick on the chunk, they had 2 bites landing one 52"/ 87# BFT before having to head for the barn early due to thunderstorms.

We fish everyday and we'll keep you updated.

Saturday August 24 and Sunday August 25 have just become available, call us ASAP to reserve a great summer weekend.

Today we had over 20 boats leave the marina in their search for fish and a majority had luck. Most of our private boats returned today with reports of yellow fin and dolphin after trolling at the canyons. Captain Ed Kauffman on the "Jade II" returned with a report of a white marlin release and a nice blue fin tuna in the box. Aboard the "Foolish Pleasures" Captain Dale Lisi had a good day with 2 dolphin and an impressive yellow fin (photo) that weighed in at 96 pounds and is the current leaderboard holder. Another change in the leaderboard was made in the golden tile fish category. Captain Ron Callis on the "Reel Addicition" shifted the position with his 43 pound golden tilefish (photo), which was among 6 others, and a gaffer dolphin. More yellow fin were seen off of the "Playmate" with Captain Jeremey Shandrowski. A blue marlin estimated around 350 pounds was released today from the "Playtime" with Captain Ron Taylor. The "Blood, Sweat & Tears" with Captain Jeremy Blunt returned from their trip with 2 nice sized dolphin. One of our private boats the "Wayne's World" with Captain Darrin Roe landed an impressive wahoo weighing in at 68 pounds (photo) accompanied by 2 nice gaffer dolphin.
