Final day of the Bahia Marina Mako Mania Shark Tournament is today and it is wide open. The 12.8 lb. bluefish will be tough to beat, but other than that, there is nothing on the board. All 30 boats should be fishing today.


At 9:00 AM, the charter boat, “Restless Lady” reported that they have a 75-inch mako on the boat. Caught outside the Hot Dog.


At 9:30 AM, Capt John Oughton on the charter boat, “That’s Right” reported in. It was a slow start, but they have caught 3 out of 5 yellowfins, deep in the Baltimore Canyon (37.974973/-73.598313)


Rumors have it that yellowfins and bluefins are being caught in 200 fathoms on the northeast corner of the Wilmington Canyon.


Chadd Lucas caught a 5 lb. weakfish in the West Channel in front of Gudelsky Park.


“Ridin’ Thirty” weighed a 100 lb. mako shark caught on a whole bluefish at the Hot Dog.


Charter boat, “Restless Lady” weighed a 123 lb. mako shark, caught


“Tuna Box” brought in the heaviest thresher caught this year, a 485 pounder caught on a bonita fillet outside the Sausages.


Walter Moore caught a thresher shark, estimated at 500 lbs., while fishing at the Fingers with cut mackerel.


Charter boat, “Skip’s Charter & Guide Service” had another good day striper fishing around the South Jetty. They caught numerous short stripers and put a couple of keepers in the boat. Largest measured 46-inches. Caught on live spot.


“Dawg Haus” ventured out to the Baltimore Canyon (100-500 f) and ended up with 6 yellowfins and a dolphin. Largest YFT weighed 70 lbs.


“Old Skool” released 7 dusky sharks at the Fingers.


It was a busy day at the Mako Mania Shark Tournament. Here’s what we saw:


Charter boat, “Moore Bills” weighed a 209.5 lb. mako shark, caught on a bluefish fillet at the Rockpile. Fish ended up in 1st place in the Mako Division.


“Sea Ya” weighed a 112.5 lb. mako shark, caught on a whole bluefish at the Rockpile.


“First & More” weighed a 143.2 lb. mako shark, caught on a whole bluefish at the 30 Fathom Lump.


“Mycin” weighed a 108.1 lb. mako shark.


Charter boat, “Reel Addiction” caught a 108.1 lb. mako shark, caught on a whole mackerel in 30 fathoms inside the Washington Canyon.


“Stress Reel-ief” weighed a 144.8 lb. mako shark caught on a bluefish fillet at the Lobster Claw. This fish ended up in 2nd place. The crew also won the WW Harman award for most mako releases (5).


“Runnin’ Late” weighed a 95.6 lb. mako shark that did not qualify. Caught in Massey’s Canyon.


SATURDAY, June 8, 2013


The 2nd day of the Bahia Marina Mako Mania Shark Tournament was held today. Pretty uneventful. “No Limits” weighed a 94 lb. mako that fell short of the 100 lb. minimum. They did weigh a 12.8 lb. bluefish to sit in first place in the Bluefish Division. Guys were fishing around the Hambone.


Reports were that it was very rough today with a very big swell.


Tonight around 8:30 PM, Capt. Skip Maguire called in to report that the striper bite around the tip of the South Jetty was red hot. They had already caught many fish, including a 40-incher they had in the box. All were caught on live spot.


FRIDAY, June 7, 2013


The Bahia Marina Mako Mania Shark Tournament started today. 29 boats are registered. Due to the crappy weather, only 2 boats are signed up to fish today. Weigh-ins are from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.


The South Jersey Shark Tournament out of Cape May, NJ, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been rescheduled for next weekend.


Charter boat, “That’s Right” went shark fishing around the Hot Dog and didn’t have any bites.


The 2 boats that fished today in the Bahia Marina Mako Mania Shark Tournament didn’t have any fish to be weighed.


THURSDAY, June 6, 2013


Small stripers, with an occasional keeper, were caught last night around the South Jetty. Bite wasn’t as good as the previous night. Better bite was around the Rt. 50 Bridge.


At 11:00 AM, Capt. John Oughton on the charter boat, “That’s Right” reported that they have a 130 lb. mako in box. They are drifting in 30 fathoms above the Hot Dog. Fish ate a bluefish. (38.184 / 74.236)


Charter boat, “Skip’s Charter & Guide Service” fished the South Jetty from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM last night. Anglers hooked 30 stripers, all too short to keep. All bit live spot.


Charter boat, “Restless Lady” caught a 100 lb. mako and released 2 duskies and 3 tiger sharks. They were fishing around the Hot Dog.


“Thrillseeker” released 4 makos and 3 duskies at the Hambone. All were hooked on bluefish fillets. On dusky was estimated at 200 lbs.


Anglers on the charter boat, “Skip’s Charter & Guide Service” hooked 58 stripers and ended up with 3 keepers, all on live spot around the South Jetty. Several of the fish were very close to the 28-inch minimum, but were released.


Charter boat, “That’s Right” had a 145 lb. mako shark, caught in 30 fathoms at the Hot Dog.


Michael Hoyt caught a 20.5-inch flounder while fishing on the head boat, “Morning Star” at an artificial reef. Fish was fooled with a chunk of clam.


WEDNESDAY, June 5, 2013


Capt. John Oughton on the charter boat, “That’s Right” reported in at 8:00 this morning to say that they hd 9 yellowfins in the box, but they had to travel 135 miles south to get them.


Capt. John Oughton on the charter boat, “That’s Right” reported in at 11:00 that they had a box full of yellowfins (18) and were heading home. They were off Wanchese when they started for home.


There was an excellent striped bass bite on the South Jetty yesterday afternoon and evening. You had to weed through a lot of short fish to get your keepers, but they were there to be caught.


Charter boat, “Skip’s Charter & Guide Service” hooked 60 stripers with 2 keepers, all on live spot at the South Jetty late in the afternoon.


Charter boat, “Get Sum” had 8 keeper flounder caught on Gulp Swimming Mullets at the South Jetty during their morning trip.


Head boat, “Happy Hooker” returned with 3 flounder from the bay behind Assateague Island. Largest was 19 3/4-inches.


George and Jonathan Ganzzermiller caught a pair of flounder during the outgoing tide off the Rt. 50 Bridge. Fish measured 19 1/2 and 22″.


“Muff Diver” returned with a 125 lb. mako shark from 30 fathoms outside the Hambone.


Charter boat, “Lucky Break” had 6 flounder, up to 22-inches, 1 weakfish (21″) and 1 striper (29″). All were caught on Gulp! Swimming Mullets at the South Jetty.


Big Bird Cropper hooked 15 stripers on his Roy Rig at the South Jetty this morning at the end of the incoming tide. All were short except for a 33-incher.


Charter boat, “OC Guide Service” returned with 4 flounder in the box. All were caught on white Gulp! Swimming Mullets at the South Jetty.


Donna Matarese landed 2 nice flounder (18″ & 22″) at the South Jetty on a bucktail tipped with Gulp!. Donna was fishing on the charter boat, “OC Guide Service”.
